Why Route GA4 Through Server-Side GTM?
Direct browser-to-Google Analytics 4 transmissions expose sensitive query parameters and are increasingly blocked by browser privacy shields. By sending GA4 hits through your own server instance on TagFlow, you gain absolute control over every incoming telemetry packet.
1. Automatic IP Anonymization
Unlike browser tagging where Google automatically sees the client's public IP address, TagFlow allows you to strip or replace IP addresses before events leave your server infrastructure:
// GTM Server Client Transformation
Event Model Parameter: ip_override
Action: Set to 0.0.0.0 or Redact
2. Stripping Accidental PII from URLs
Email marketing campaigns frequently append email addresses or personal IDs to page URLs (e.g. [email protected]). In sGTM, you can sanitize query strings using regex before transmitting them to Google Analytics.
3. Extending Client Session Persistence
By issuing the _ga cookie from your first-party domain using HttpOnly and Secure flags, user sessions persist for the full 2 years across all browser engines.
